[Applied Meteorology Unit (AMU), Range Operations Control Center
ROCC), Code YA-D]
Statistical Forecasting of Lightning Cessation Project
(2004 Summer Quarter)
Performed contractual research in meteorology, applying statistical
curve-fitting to the slowing lightning flash rate in decaying
thunderstorms to estimate the probability of occurrence of
one or more flashes and simulate decisions to cancel advisories.
A climatology and a time series for strikes were derived from the
probability distribution of times between the next-to-last and last
flashes, based upon continuous surveillance via satellite and radar.

Performed contractual research in atmospheric-ocean modeling,
simulating the earth’s climate in three dimensions on a gridded
domain, modifying and improving a conglomeration of computer
programs and adding new versions to simulate observed climatic
relationships for making projections into the future. As a part
of a national investigation of the impacts of climate variability,
files from very large databases were downloaded from the Internet
at 1×1 horizontal resolution and interpolated to the GISS Model’s
5×4 resolution and analyzed by our sophisticated temporal scheme
to improve the model and make predictions, based upon time-varying
prognostic variables such as fluid mass, horizontal velocity,
heat, salt, water vapor, surface mass, sea ice thickness and
concentration, sea surface temperature and energy fields.
